I have read reviews about Manic Panic,Splat and Jerome Russell's line of colorful hair color but I've read that they don't last long. I have medium and dark brown hair. I really don't want to bleach my hair. I'm planning on put the dye on the ends of my hair. I'm also wondering if i should use permanent,semi-permanent or demi-permanent. Which one is last longer?

Answer
Typically these colors are not available in permanent color lines, professional or drug store. Manic Panic, Spat, Pravana etc are all categorized as Semi Permanent, as there is no developer (peroxide) used to activated it. We refer to them as Direct Dyes, and prefer Pravana. Because the color is staining the top of the hair cuticle, (and not depositing into the hair strand like permanent color), it is important follow these steps to achieve the best color saturation:

1) Hair must be clarified with a Chelating shampoo, to eliminate old drug store conditions and stylers to produce even porosity = even color.
2) Pre-lightening the hair, (with bleach), a few shades will increase the vibrancy of the fashion color, and open the cuticle to allow color to get wedged deeper into the strand.
3) Apply a plastic shower cap, and apply heat for deeper color deposit.
4) Gently wash hair with color safe professional shampoo and conditioner, rinsing with cool water. This will bring down the pH level and lock in the color.
5) Cleanse and condition your hair every other day with professional color safe products like Pure0logy or Prive to maintain color.

good hair coloring salon s in san francisco or san jose area?

Count Choc

where can one go to get a really good hair color in the san francisco or san jose california area? I want bold like dark brown/black with the red highlights, nobody ever gives me what I ask for... has anyone here had experience getting a good coloring in this area, if you have the name of a salon, hair colorist and perhaps a price range, that would be lovely :)

Answer
Angela Pape

i LOVE the salon
it's in SF. she does an amazing job on hair. (actually went to high school for a year with her and shes a good friend of my sisters)

paris hilton's mom has been there, and fergie goes there to get her hair done...if that's any validation.

it's pricey, but worth it.

I color my hair. It is all gray. I am afraid to shampoo often because I fear that the color will come out. Does anyone know of a gentle drugstore brand that is affordable and good and won't strip my hair color? Any advice is greatly appreciated xox.

Answer
There's Herbal Essences "color me happy" which is a shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. You can find out more about it and other Herbal Essences shampoos at http://herbalessences.com/en-US/hair-care .

There's also Aussie "Color Mate" which is a bit hard for find but you may be able to find it.

There's Garnier Fruitcus and Pantene too!

Hope this helps!

how to dye your dark brown hair to blond without the orange?

soul101

My natural hair color is dark brown. I dyed my hair three times already, dark blond, medium blond, after light blond. I bought the hair colors from the Lo-real . However, I don't know why my hair color never gets really blond blond. Instead the result is always kind of light orange. Some people like it but I hate it.
Please how to avoid the red or orange color when using drugstore brand. I would like to dye my own hair, because I cannot afford to go every 4 weeks to a hairdresser.
Does anyone have the same problems?

Answer
bleach your hair. then dye your hair blond. I might take a while, but it is worth it.

I am African American with 4b/c natural hair.

I want to dye my hair using SheaMoisture Coloring Line system and then follow up shortly with Organix Brazillian Keratin 30 Day treatment.

Has anyone used both of these products on natural hair? I currently have SheaMoisture's Dark Golden Blonde hair color in my head now. I dyed it about a month ago. I have never used a BKT before.

Please advise and suggest! Thanks!

Answer
Heat & chemicals are hair's worst enemies.

Chemicals can enter the body through the skin. BOTH causes cancer.

> > > Hair dye chemicals linked to cancer
London, Feb 20, 2013 I've been saying that since 2009.
Hair dyes, which include home hair colouring kits and those used at pricey salons, are linked to deadly cancer-causing chemicals, warn scientists. In 2009 the Mail revealed that women who used hair dyes more than nine times a year had a 60% greater risk of contracting blood cancer.
A year later the European Commission banned 36 hair dyes which put long-term users at risk of bladder cancer. < < < <â¨

The chemical is not new and is present in a number of brands of dark hair colours, acting to help adhere the dye to the hair so that it doesn't wash out. Itâs made from coal tar and is used in both permanent and semi-permanent hair colours. Itâs well-known to be a cause of serious allergic reactions -- including something called contact dermatitis which can lead to rashes, blisters, and open sores.
PPD is sometimes added to black henna tattoos and that using them is not safe. Allergic reactions usually begin within two to 10 days following application. One bad reaction can lead to sensitivities to other products such as hair dye, sunblock and some types of clothing dyes. Oftentimes, it's using the product a second or third time. Skin specialist Najjia Ashraf reveals that there are barely any dyes that donât contain this toxin; even the ones who claim they donât, are not being honest. âBig brands often escape the blame by suggesting they are ammonia-free. However, ammonia and PPD are two very different things and PPD is present in nearly every dye because it is what gives off the colour,â she explains.

Permanent black hair dye is linked to causing leukemia and lymphomas.

Google: What Does Organic Mean for Beauty Products?

Hair-straightening products are allowed to contain small concentrations of formaldehyde (0.2 percent). But several hair-straightening solutions have been found to contain well above the allowable limit. For example, one popular hair-straightening product that advertised itself as âformaldehyde-freeâ actually contained 6.8 percent to 11.8 percent formaldehyde.
Another example: Fourteen women, including two from North Texas and one from Houston, are suing Unilever, the maker of a product they claim caused permanent damage to their hair.
"It transforms frizzy, unmanageable hair into hair that's sleeker and easier to style," said the commercial for the Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit, which is no longer being sold
When she began looking online for more information about the product, she said she found some people who said it worked, but more who said it damaged their hair.
She discovered a Facebook page devoted to angry consumers, and there are multiple postings on YouTube. I've been warning people about relaxers since 2009 and people are giving me thumbs down!
BTW: A variety of hair-straightening products used in professional salons can expose both hairdressers and their customers to formaldehyde. The results show that three professional hair-smoothing treatments labeled "formaldehyde free" can produce the cancer-causing chemical at concentrations above the occupational exposure limits set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. They tested four products: Coppola Keratin Complex Blonde Formula, Global Keratin Juvexin Optimized Functional Keratin, La Brasiliana Escluso Keratin Treatment with Collagen, and Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Solution. While ChemRisk tested four popular brands of hair straighteners, THERE ARE HUNDREDS on the market. Nov. 11-11

By contrast, beauty salon owners and stylists generally lack a scientific background and don't have a keen awareness of the danger of working with products that contain formaldehyde, experts say.

Is it possible to reverse the effects of hair colouring or to remove hair colour from hair?

Q. I've dyed my hair several times over the last 2 or 3 years, and I realize it's impossible to get my natural hair colour back, but are there ways to remove hair dye from my hair? I've heard the term 'getting hair stripped', what does this mean? If there are procedures to remove hair dye, how much would this cost approximately?
Not sure if it matters, but my natural hair is a light dirty blonde, and I've dyed it a very dark brown as well as orangey red colours in the past, so right now it's an ugly brown with red tinge.
If I decide to let it just grow out, will I somewhat get my natural colour, even after years of dying?

Answer
Try just 'letting it grow' for about two months and then go get a 'crew cut' from your hair dresser ... the hair that is left will be your 'natural color' and that might be 'different' from the color your hair was before you started coloring it ... but it is still your 'natural color.' DO NOT HAVE ANY MORE CHEMICAL PROCESSES done to your hair. Eventually it will all 'grow out' and you'll have your 'natural hair color' again ... that 'crew cut' is just because you are 'sick of' your 'colored hair' ... and most women actually look really good with a 'crew cut' ... even for just as long as it takes to 'grow out' again ... and as to 'cost' ... I pay my hairdresser $30 for each 'haircut' he gives me, which is a bit on the 'high side' but I TRUST HIM with my hair, totally. You could go to a 'barber' and get it done for around $12 ... which isn't bad, considering how much you've 'damaged' your hair with all the 'color' you've put in it.

How can i keep my hair from being greasy?

i've tried lots of things, one big problem is my hair is curly at the bottom and really, really dry at the bottom but it gets greasy and nasty at the top, how can i fix this. i don't want to dry my hair out more but i hate the greasiness. Don't tell me to use this or that shampoo because i swear i've tried hundreds out. Any home remedies or tips i can follow? my hair is also very very coarse and rough, anything to make it softer? please help!

Answer
You've tried everything? That's just it, you've been a guinea pig for products that absolutely do not do it for you. Another example why the hair industry is a billion dollar business.

First of you, you are probably using the wrong shampoo. There are shampoos that do not promote grease, example Garnier for Normal Hair. I would have taken them all back, if they made my hair greasy.

Shampoos that advertise, shine, or smooth like Pantene, Alberto Vo5, Herbal Essence, Suave FOR ME they make my hair greasy on the 2nd day. They're mostly for damaged hair because they worked for me when my hair was permed or dyed.

Another reason, probably you have conditioner build-up.

You can tame the coarse & rough and make it softer, by setting your hair in plastic curlers (even guys uses them in the hair color & fashion industry). Blow-dry and when you take them out, finger comb to style.

How do I make my hair less curly?

Bella M.

How do I make my hair less curly, more long, and less frizzy without using straighteners or gels?

Answer
One method to make it look fuller, add body, bouncier, thicker, softer & shiny hair is to set your hair with plastic curlers after you towel dry, you'll end up with uniform balance of curls. Blow dry briefly while curling them in curlers. Take them out, and finger comb to style. Used by the best hair color models, and the fashion industry, like Victoria Secret Fashion Show Dec. 2009, America's Next Top Models, EXPRESS, Dancing with the Stars . . . . and continued to be used today where salons care about pampering your hair. When you see hair on TV a hair color commercial, they're not done by curling or straightening tools. Hair that shines like that and feels like hair, not hay, has to be done by the best hair tools available w/out damaging to the hair. When you take the curlers out, finger comb to style or lightly brush. Tousle the hair up. or shake your hair. You can use large, medium or small curlers, that depends on the length of your hair.

Also: use pro round brush/blow dry briefly.

Most people say that it is harmful to the baby to dye your hair during pregnancy...

Ive asked 3 cosmetologists/hair artists and they say
its not harmful, one said the only reason they say not to dye your hair is because your roots can change a different color when dying them? Orang-ish?

some people say its because of the fumes when I go to the salon.. there arent really any fumes now I would never use an at home hair coloring kit while pregnant because those fumes are KILLER

so, I'm just curious is this a myth?

and no rude answers please!

Answer
No you can die your hair, my friend is a hair colorist and worked until she had to take a leave of absence to have her baby and care for her. She was around fumes 8-10hours a day. She has 2 kids. She's done it with both. :) And they are 100% healthy.

Your fine.

Like everyone else said, your hormones are whacked out, so if you go in wanting to be blond and come out green you can't get mad at the colorist.

Anybody get their hair colored or hilighted during pregnancy?

Mary Posa

It seems as though the topic of hair color and pregnancy is very controversial. Anybody know of anyone who had a baby with problems due to coloring or hilighting their hair....or do you hilight and/or color your hair.... How do you moms or moms to be feel about this. It also seems that there is no concrete evidence that it is dangerous. I realize that it is best to avoid it and not take a chance and I'm not but I was just wondering what you girls think about it.

Answer
Hair Dyes and Perms During Pregnancy

It's hard enough to feel beautiful when you're pregnant, but then along comes the warning that hair dyes and permanents might be harmful to a fetus. This subject causes great debate among hairdressers, doctors, researchers, and expectant mothers. In the end, all we know is that not much is known about the effects of these beauty products on the fetus.

Certainly there are chemicals in hair dyes and permanent solutions that are toxic and known to cause cancer and genetic mutations. The question is, how much does it take to cause this damage? Studies on animals that show harm to the fetus have used doses 100 times higher than would ever be used on your own head. As the debate rages on,you can safely keep your hair dyed and permed if you use a bit of caution.

* Avoid perming or dying in the first three months of your pregnancy.
* Choose semipermanent dyes over permanent dyes. Better yet, stick with natural henna products.
* Wear gloves and open the windows if you apply the solution yourself.
* Because the chemicals are absorbed into the bloodstream through the scalp, not the hair itself, it's probably safe to have your hair highlighted, frosted, painted, or streaked. These methods keep most of the dye away from the scalp.

Q. And what sort of curlers are best? I tried using curlers a couple of months ago but they didn't stay in.. do I need to clip them? I have my bath in the evening, is it best to apply them to wet hair and sleep in them overnight? I love 50s hair. My hair is sort of long at the moment but I want a medium sort of length maybe with a blunt fringe? Might be easier to work with, huh?

Answer
In the 50's, many women permed their hair and set them in plastic curlers. The longer their hair, the bigger the curlers (not Velcro - they gobble up your hair when taking them out).

Google: Imogen Thomas wears rollers in her hair to take out the trash. Use bobby pins.

In the 50's, I was 1st grade when my cousin came to town and gave the whole family perms, but I had short hair and I styled my hair while still damp, and it remained styled (like Elvis curlled like faux hauk in the middle I have photo of that) and they remained like that until I get home from school.

One method to make it look fuller, add body, tame the curls, bouncier, thicker, SEXIER, softer & shinier hair is to set your hair with plastic curlers (not Velcro) after you towel dry, you'll end up with uniform balance of curls. Blow dry briefly while curling them in curlers. Take them out, and finger comb to style. Used by the best hair color models, and the fashion industry, like Victoria Secret Fashion Show Dec. 2009, 2010, & 2011, America's Next Top Models, EXPRESS, Toddlers & Tiaras, Dance Moms, Dancing with the Stars, even used on Oprah's hair . . . . and continued to be used today where salons care about pampering your hair. Think of JLo's hair, she was voted as the Sexiest Woman by People magazine and Glamour's Woman of the Year 2011.

The women also didn't have much money, but they have money to buy bobby pins, for short hair, they do that when the hair is wet. In the USA, many of us women went to bed with curlers on, they didn't have hair dryer as well. . . we didn't for years, that's why we use a towel to dry our hair and air dry the rest of the day, that's why we set them when the hair was damp.

How much does it cost to have salon's dye your hair?

Rebecca

I have long hair, past my shoulders. I want to know how much it would cost to get my professionally dyed, cut short, and layered. I want it bright pink. Put the name of the business with your answer.
Thanks!!

Answer
031612

Long hair will always cost more money. Also, a woman's haircut usually is more expensive that a man's haircut. For some reason, salons like to charge more money for a "woman haircut". Salons themselves say that in their websites, advertising, etc.

I can't really give you a specific number, because costs vary b/w salons. I can however give you a range. If you want an exact number, your best bet is to go that salon's site or call them.

Since you want it bright pink, they will prolly hafta bleach it first, then go over it with pink. Therefore, that 2-step process will obvs cost more money.

You will spend AT LEAST $45 for haircut. You will spend prolly at least $100 for bleach. You will spend prolly at least $50 for the pink hairdye. Unfortunately, this does not include tip. I usu. don't tip since I always NEVER get the result that I paid (a lot of money) for!

If you want to save money, I'd say DYI. I learned how to color AND cut my hair through the power of the internet. If you do an online search for the haircut you want, you can find steps and videos on how to do it. A very good example is youtube. If you want bright pink hair, I suggest bleaching your hair and using a dye like manic panic. Loreal makes a "pink hairdye", but I forgot their name. Splat has the dye AND bleach in one box.

Hair Cut = $45 and up
Hair Color = $50 and up

I have had my hair coloured at the salon but my roots grow out fast (grey) - I have to colour my roots myself every two weeks and can't afford to go the hairdresser that often - how do I mix colours - she used No 6 Dark Blonde Majirel and Majirouge 7-62 Ultra Red. What proportions do I mix on my roots and is it ok to use my 6% developer?

I look forward to your usual helpful replies.

Answer
Hi, I work in a salon where we use majirel as well as richesse, although i would not suggest doing your color at home, because now your not sure how she mixed it. she couldve used only a quater of 6 or 3/4 vice versa. So before you go ahead and do that you might want to find out what porportions she used. AND NO DO NOT USE 6. You must use 20 vol cream developer... also perhaps to try and last the regular 4 weeks from coloring it, I suggest the color mascara's from RICKYS NYC. It's just like a mascara tube but for your hairline. perhaps that way you can apply that to you part and sides around the face that really bother you. it last's i believe til the next shampoo. but it's great for events or just a day out and those greys are bothering you !!

i have a skinny body but a cubby face , i want to make my face look skinner with a new style, what lengt of hair sould i have ,should i have bangs? layers? my hair length now is medium to long i want to keep my hair long after i cut it maybe u can even provide a picture and by the way does expensive salons really cut your hair better?

Answer
There's always the classic style of layered hair..
short layers on top and maybe 4-5 layers going down..
Short layers on top means more volume up on top, and it can also thing out your hair to.
If you have a chubby face you don't want big poofy hair either (if applicable).
And with layered hair it's better if you want longer hair (like past your boobs) because layers provide thinness for thick hair so it's not all thick and frizzy when it's long, but layers (if you don't get too many) can also create more volume for thin hair... and it evens everything out and makes longer hair healthier. Hair length is personal preference.. if you ask them to keep your hair longer past your shoulders, salons tend to charge you more because it's more layers (if applicable) they have to cut and it takes more work I guess? haha
And for bangs it depends on your forehead and etc etc.. some people look good withOUT side bangs.. I look gross without sidebangs.
Expensive salons may have stylists with more credentials etc.
I only go to places run by Asian though ahahaha because only they know what to do with Asian hair.. this place in chinatown is so cheap and the people know how to do nice trendy hairstyles ...

Ms. Tradit

One of my dear friends recently got married and when I saw his wife-to-be walk down the aisle wearing an all white gown that was designed for a 20-something year-old body, I couldn't help but feel that it was very inappropriate - almost lacking etiquette, class or taste. This was the second marriage for both and they both have grown children. Am I really that old-fashioned?

Answer
I was a 53 years old divorcee with four adult children when I married for the second time.

I wore garnet red....I felt at my age, while white is just another color, to wear a gown of any color designed for a young woman would look ludicrous on me... and make my age glaringly apparent in a rather very unflattering way.

It certainly would have been tasteless...one should dress appropriate to one's age to look one's best at ANY AGE......

When I was growing up in the 60's we had a group of 60+ ladies the town called "The Go-Go Grandmas " They wore tight very short mini skirts, fishnet stockings, huge dangle earrings, white go-go boots and long flowing hair as if they were a mere 16 years old.....OMG if they only KNEW how they looked to others...it made them look so 'OLD' and not too classy either....

However, their choice.

You are not old fashioned, dear....just sensible with a better grasp of both reality and style than the bride was-who is probably the type who dresses way too 'young' for her age.
She should have gone for a sophisticated rather than a Miss Haversham look...sweet, innocent young styles look silly on a mature body. It does NOT make one look youthfull..it makes them far older than they are.

Once your friend sees how she looks in her pix, unless she has convinced herself she looked young, she may be very disappointed so please, do not say anything as long as she is happy.

Does your hair texture change as you get older?

Girl

I've noticed that alot of older women (40's & 50's) have hair that looks really hard and crispy and fried. Like their hair just doesn't feel soft at all, it just feels so hard and it doesn't move. Helmet hair basically.

Is it because they are using hair spray or is it because of their age?

Answer
Not exactly. It may dry out a little bit. And gray hair does have a slightly coarser texture than natural colored hair. This is because the older you get, the more dried out your skin will be. If you have dry skin you typically also have dry hair. So because your skin is not producing those oils like it did when you were younger, your hair is suffering from lack of natural oils.

Their hair probably looks crispy and fried because of what they're doing to it. My mom is 51 and her hair is gorgeous and silky. She colors it at home herself with a semi-permanent hair color at the most once a year. My mother-in-law, 55 years old on the other hand, changes her hair color...and I'm not joking about this, every 3 weeks with permanent dye...I'm really surprised it hasn't fallen out. And it's condition is so bad. Dry, frizzy. It looks very unhealthy.

If you take care of your hair it will not look bad when you're older. Of course, all you'd have to do if it did look that bad is hold off on the products until it all grew out.

Audition Song for "The Who's Tommy?"?

I'm planning to audition for The Who's Tommy at the Children's Theater Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you've never heard of the musical, it's a rock opera. They said that we should come prepared with a contemporary musical theater or pop song. I'm a Baritone and my vocal range is from the low F to the F above middle C. Any ideas on what song I should sing? Thanks.
The Children's Theater is a professional theater. Not a community theater.

Answer
It's best to sing a song from another rock-style musical. Because it's community theatre and not a professional setting, I wouldn't be worried about singing something from a popular musical. Check out songs from these shows. I've listed songs in the musicals that are written for the baritone:

Aida - "Another Pyramid", "Like Father, Like Son"
Bat Boy - "Dance With Me, Darling"
Godspell - "Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord"
Jesus Christ Superstar - "Pilate's Dream", "Try It and See"
Hair - "Sodomy", "I'm Black/Colored Spade", "Manchester England", "Aint Got No", "I Got Life", "Where Do I Go?", "Eyes Look Your Last"
RENT - "What You Own", "Halloween"
Rocky Horror Picture Show - "The Sword of Damoches", "Rose Tint My World"
Spring Awakening - "And Then There Were None", "The Mirror-Blue Night"
The Full Monty - "Big Black Man", "You Rule My World"

Break a leg!

Where can I find blue hair dye?

I live in Minneapolis, MN and I don't want to order online or go to a stylist! THANKS!

Answer
i would go to sallys beauty supply. they are usually located by a target. i would google map it and see where the closest one is to you. and get manic panic. its good. but dont forget. most fun colors are deposit only. that means you will have to bleach the part of your head that you want to put it on.

enjoy

Answer
You want to do large curls on your hair and pin these up before you let them down to set them in place.
You could also do this with large velcro rollers if you wish.

Heres a link to how to set hair:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uw90n9zWEGE << this looks very similiar to the image you shown me.

This is with rollers:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG9ocjE7y90

Brush out the curls, back comb/tease areas you want more volume, (bangs/fringe, crown of the head) and lightly back comb the curls its self on the sides of the head for a more messy roughed up look.

Heres a link on how to tease/backcomb:

Hope this helps! Have fun x

What are some pretty hairstyles for short hair?

Just Anoth

I'm cutting and donating my hair in a couple of days, and I'm getting a new hairstyle while I'm at it. Any suggestions for short, pretty hairstyles? My hair is going to be cut above my shoulders. It's naturally straight, fairly thin, dark brown/black if that bit helps. Pictures would be great too :)

Thank you in advance :)

I have curly hair type. When I sleep with the back of my head on the pillow at night I wake up and the back of my hair is really dry and frizzy and it looks weird cuz the rest of my head is curly but the back is frizzy. How do I solve this issue? And I can't brush my hair because if I do it gets really dry and frizzy. I do comb my hair though when its wet and I get out but I cant comb my hair when its dry.

Answer
lol that's why curly girls in the know use a satin pillow case or a cap. Also, do the pineapple! http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/hairstyles/how-to-pineapple-your-hair

Also, you must try the No shampoo method, it's a miracle to get rid of the frizz!
http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-products/all-about-the-no-poo-routine-2

NEVER comb your hair, wet or dry! No, no, no.

Look at the results:

How to prevent hairstyle from being ruined?

Waqas

Is there anything that I can use on my hairs before going to bed, so that next morning when I get up my hairstyle is not ruined and bounce is not lost! Please help me :) I am guy with front hair near eye length and side puff!

Answer
You'll think I'm crazy but what ruins many dos is actually your pillow. Sleep on a satin pillow, it is very gentle on your scalp, and in years to come it's recommended to minimize facial lines and wrinkles. Google it if you dont believe me!
