My nautral color is dark brown but I have dyed it for years because I suspect I am now nearly gray. I just would like to know if I ever want to stop dyeing it, do I have to look like a mangy animal in between or is there a way to go to all gray 'gracefully' ..

Answer
My mother just went through this same thing (she's about 75% - 80% grey). She wanted to go grey for years so she could stop dying her hair dark brown.

What you'll need to do it go to a salon that does highlights/foils. Tell them you want white ash colored highlights so you can start to grow your grey hair out (the lighest color blond with an ash tone to it takes away any yellow color and makes it almost seem silver/grey). Also let them know you want the highlights small and lots of them, not just a few large thick ones. Emphasize that you want the highlights very white, not yellow blond, that this is to help you go grey, not to go blond.

The first time my mother went in to get this done, the woman didn't listen to her at all and dyed her hair a reddish brown and gave her yellow/blond highlights. Sure, she looked great, but she was trying to go grey and look in her 50's, not look 30.

The second time she went in, I sent her to the girl who does my hair and explained to the stylist that we needed white ash highlights to go grey. She did it and it worked. She went in 1 more time about 2 months later and had some more white ash highlights put in (to help blend in the new growth). And now she has all her natural color (salt and pepper brown/grey, mostly grey).

The white ash highlights basically look like grey hair and will make the new growth you will have of you own grey hair blend better. Be sure to make it clear to whom ever is doing you hair what you want. If they have that look about them like they are thinking "yeah yeah I know what you want", then they aren't listening. Get someone who actually is listening to what your goal is, and isn't just thinking you one of the hundreds of people coming in who want regular blond highlights.
