hairrrrrr colour help?

Q. i have always died my hair, but whenever i have it goes straight to the darkest brown/black possible, its reallannoyin because even if i use dark blonde shades or very light brown and it still manages to go to that really dark colour. My hair is naturally very light red/brown and it doesn't matter if i use semi permanant or permananat it still does this!! I can't afford to have it died at the hair dressers atm and i don't want to ebrace my natural colour. I just want a medium/dark brown. anyhair dyes that work well for this? and what can i do to make sure it doesn't go really dark, again.

can layers make short hair appear longer?

I used to have an a-line bob and it's grown out now. the back is just past my shoulders and the front is about an inch below my shoulders. Will layers make it appear at least a bit longer? The way it looks now is so blunt and I kinda need to do something about it. It's frustrating.
