do the dogs in grooming competitions get shaved or cut after a competition?
Babyfilly
I was just wondering because I was looking at some pictures and they had poodles in some very interesting looks and I was just wondering if the dogs get cut or shaved after the competition is over and also I saw peacock feathers on one dog so I was wondering if they are glued to their fur or to their skin and does it hurt them? It seems cute and harmless as the groomers are just dyeing their fur and not their skin and I don't think they use actual hair dyes on the dogs besides food coloring or vegetable dyes. Is this true?
Answer
There are special vegetable based colors made for coloring dog hair. These aren't dyes and they aren't permanent. They wash out after several baths, given over time.
The dogs are bathed, after things like feathers and sequins and rhinestones are removed, and they are usually given a kind of simple clip (not left looking like Miami Beach or Mount Rushmore or a Mardi Gras celebration, for examples). Temporarily putting feathers, etc. in a dog's coat won't hurt it. There are companies that sell colored feathers on clips to be used on dogs. Very little glue is used to hold things in the dog's hair (sequins, rhinestones) and that little bit of hair with glue can be trimmed off IF the glue doesn't just wash out.
The dogs used in Creative Grooming competitions are sometimes retired show dogs, some are the groomer's own dog, others are borrowed from friends or clients, and sometimes you can even rent a dog for the competition. Everyone who loans, rents or owns a dog that is going to this kind of competition knows ahead of time that the dog will be somewhat colorful for weeks to come after the show and that the dog will be trimmed down. They don't usually get "shaved" (no groomer uses a razor on a dog) but the uneven parts, where a big flower may have been, will be trimmed down and evened out.
If you want to color your own dog, you can find the colors at Pet Edge, www.petedge.com.
