I'm a guy with lots of hair.(14). Its like semi long. It stops before it reaches my shoulders. Its thick though, and I have a lot. Am I suppose to cut it so I can have lesser hair, but still about the same length?

I bought American Crew pomade, but it doesn't seem that slippery. Like I have to kind of wet one hand so it can at least slide through my fingers. It it suppose to be like that?

should I have bought hair styling cream?

Answer
Pomade usually works best on much shorter styles, above the ears styles like medium and long pompadours. A control wax which is essentially a denser pomade, works best on short pomp(pompadour) styles-crew cut, ivy league(long crew cut), flat top crew cut.
Here are George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney of the Beatles wearing long pomps as the Quarrymen, before their Beatles days...

In the 50's and early 60's, it was fairly common for high school basketball and football players, to go from a long pomp style to a short pomp-crew cut or flat top crew cut-during football or basketball season at the coaches request, and then grow their hair back out to a medium to long pomp style after the season was over while keeping the hair groomed with a control wax aka butch wax while shorter and a pomade while longer. College prep guys wore short pomp styles or a regular haircut year round.

A classic crew cut(round top short pomp) or flat top crew cut(brush top short pomp) so named because the top surface resembles the flat bristle surface of a brush) frame the face in essentially the same way as a medium or longer pomp when the hair on the sides is groomed with some type of hair tonic, wax etc

What can I use on my hair that will achieve the same results as hair gel, but won't look as tacky?

I really am not a hair gel fan. It's too sticky. I want something that's going to allow my hair to move, but still hold my style. Can I mix hair gel and styling cream together to get this kind of result?

Answer
I wouldn't recommend mixing...just get a good pomade, or putty, i recommend Alberto's VO5 Reworkable Putty, works better than mousse and it allows you to change your hair style up throughout the day, or just fix your hair. Hope that helps :)
