I am a girl with high maintenance hair. It is to my shoulders and curls at the tips. What are somethings I can do to make my hair pretty without spending a fortune?

My face is round. I have pretty thick hair. It's dark brown and it's about 4-7 inches past my shoulders. I just made the cheer team and I'm going into 8th grade. Last year my normal hair styles were down with a headband or a ponytail. I need hair styles bad. Will someone please please help me?
