Three sist
So three years ago, I cut my butt-length hair to my shoulders. Now it's down to my butt again, and it's 32 inches long. I'm going off to college next week, and I'm thinking of chopping it to my shoulders again, just so it's easy to maintain and I don't spend a fortune in shampoo! However, my friends all love my long hair, saying it makes me different than the other girls. Last time I donated 14 inches to be made into a wig, and this time I want to donate 20 inches. Would you do it? What are the pros of having long hair over short hair? Vice versa? And what short cuts are really edgy and fun? Pictures would be nice! I have long chestnut coloured hair, never been dyed before.

Wow, 32 inches! If it's healthy, that sounds gorgeous and very unique. But, a lot of women chop their long hair around the start of college for practical and personal reasons, so you'll be in good company if you do it.
Pros of long hair: It's very feminine and very unique and if healthy, can make you stand out in a good way. Many guys *love* very long hair, so you'll likely get a lot of attention for it, as you probably do now. It shows commitment and consistency--that you're not falling for the latest trend every six months and changing to the latest fad short hairstyle. There's a lot you can do with it in terms of styles--wearing it up or in a braid for everyday but wearing it down for a "wow" effect.
Cons of long hair: Your living arrangements may not support maintaining it. You could be somewhere un-airconditioned when it's hot, have early morning classes, have to share a bathroom with a lot of people making washing/drying it impractical, or have bad water pressure. But you can wait a few weeks before taking the plunge to see if any of those are issues.
It's a lot of work and expense to maintain, as you know, and it can get in the way sometimes. One of the main reasons women cut their hair short is for a more practical easy to maintain look. And other women tend to perceive short hair as more stylish, cute, and fun. Short hair is seen as a more mature, sophisticated, and professional look than very long hair.
As for styles, you know shoulder length was easier to maintain, but you'll be amazed at how easy to maintain something even shorter is. If you decide to take the plunge, consider at least going with a blunt cut above your shoulders so that your hair will swing and move independent of your body. If you want something truly edgy and fun, a bob between your ears and chin can be fun. Another option is an a-line, which is longer (cheek to chin length) in the front and short and possibly stacked in the back. You'll find that once you get into styles that are too short to pull back and too short to fall in your face, that it's so much less hassle. You'll need to make a quick salon visit every 4-6 weeks, but other than that, you'll save a lot of time every day.
Finally, if you're really daring, you should consider a pixie ("boy cut"). Google "pixie hair" for a lot of ideas. A lot of girls do this in college. A super short pixie can be very edgy and completely wash and wear to the point of only needing finger-combing and air drying in 15 minutes. A longer pixie can be fun and more versatile in that it can be worn curly, combed back, messy, or straight for a few different looks.
In truth, only you can know for sure when you are ready to let go of your long hair. For some women, it's early college. For others, they wait until they settle down or get married and don't want or need to attract guys any more. If you're truly just thinking about cutting to your shoulders for less hassle, then consider keeping your hair and seeing if it works with your college life. If you're eager for an edgy and fun short cut, then it may be time to go for it. Be aware that once you cut your hair this time, you'll likely never grow it back this long. But short hair can be fun and a great change and coming-of-age ritual.

How do you color hair at home?

I bought a loreal hair color, but it doesnt give very good directions on how to actually apply the color. How do i do this? Im doing it for my boyfriend, so i really dont want to mess up. I know how to mix the colors, but i dont know how to apply it. Help!:/

what I do after I mix the colors is I get the main color bottle and open the tip or some times there a comb tip root applicator. I get either ( I perfer the comb one) and if his hair is long divide the hair into 3 separate sections and put a clip to hold the hair. I like to start with the bottom section because that way its less messy. I split that section into 2 or 3 section then quirt a line of color then rub the ends to the roots and make sure it has plenty of color but you still have to save some for the other sections. Then you repeat that to the rest. make sure use dont miss any spots in the front forhead area roots. after u do all that get all hair together and clip it if its long. wait for 30 min and rinse off the color.
