How to make short hair look messy but appropriate (guys)?

I'm 18 and my hair sort of looks like zac's in this picture http://images.stylehoster.com/lpc/uploads/2013/06/Stylish-Messy-Hairstyles-For-Men-2013.jpg , but a little more poofy than sticky looking. I was messing with my hair in the mirror, and I realized that it often looks better when it's a little rough looking. My question is: how do you skate the fine line between messy/cute and messy/gross? Thanks.

I'm not a guy ( sorry ) But I have messed with my 19 year old brothers hair quite a bit.
Your hair won't be gross unless its oily and dirty looking or it smells gross. Take some gel or styling product of your choice ( use just a small amount ) and run it through your hair, then play with it until it looks like you want it to. We are our own worst critiques, so if it looks good to you, it will probably look good to everyone else.

How long do you think my hair would have to be to get this hair cut ?

My hair is 4 inches long . Almost 5 been growing it out since April 16. I have straight . Wavy hair ( not curly at all )

Hmm... maybe down to somewhere around your eyebrow to nose tip. I feel like any length in that range would work.
