I'm going to a Susan Page Open Call...Anybody have any tips as to what I can expect or what they are looking for? What exactly happens at one of these things? All it says is to bring a photo. I don't have any professional ones so I'm taking my own. Any tips as to what type of photo I should take? (head/body shot, color/black n white, facial expression, hair style, does it matter?) Thanks!
Answer
You should take a headshot and a full body shot, minimal makeup and in color. Shoot against a plain white background so you don't see anything behind you. The picture doesn't have to be professional as long as it is clear and in good light. Blow it up to 8x10 and write your name, birthdate and contact details on the back
When you go to an open call, you are being judged on your looks. They usually don't ask you anything besides your name and age. If it's a crowded open call, you literally have about 30 seconds in front of an agent before being dismissed
1) Your height. This is the first thing they look at. At my old agency, everyone would have to take their shoes off and stand against a wall where we had 2 red marks set at 5'8" and 6'0". If you were a girl who was not 5'8" or a man age 16 or older who was not at least 6'0" you got to leave your pictures but were dismissed without even seeing an agent in person
2) Body Type. You must have a proportionate body, meaning your hips and bust measurements are within 1" of each other and your waist is at least 10" smaller than your hips. This proportion applies even to Plus Size models. If your bust is larger than your hips, you are limited to lingerie or swimsuit modeling. If your hips are larger than your bust (like 90% of women) then you don't have a model body
3) Facial features. You need to have perfectly symmetrical features. You can't have a crooked nose. Or one eye that is larger than the other. Or a mouth where one side looks fuller than the other. You also need incredibly high cheekbones, large wider-set eyes an a strong jaw line. And you need to be incredibly photogenic - the type of person who never takes a bad picture. Being photogenic is not about being pretty - we all have pretty friends who never look good in pictures, and average looking friends who look better in pics than in person. The agency would rather have an average girl who looks great in pictures.
I had never heard of Susan Page, but looking at their website it seems that they are more a school than an agency. A school will not make you a model, and a legitimate agency won't make you pay for classes before you become a model. Schools generally accept anyone willing to pay for classes, so be aware of that and don't get too excited if you get a call a few days later saying you've been accepted. Chances are everyone else who attended is getting the same call
