How do you dye only the tips of your hair at home?

I wanted to use that Color Mousse stuff that is temporary how would you get that to be only the tips of your hair?
If not, how would it be done at a salon?

you get gloves and put the mousse on for best results i then dry it a bit at the end with my hair dryer it will come out shinny if you dont want it on the rest your hair section your hair and put the bits you dont want up then start from the frist tip and make your way round..x

can you get a oneday hair color dark brown and will it work over gray hair?

I am highly allergic to anything with ammonia or peroxide. Does the one day hair colors have these in them?

L;oreal has wash out in a few days hair dye and it works great. Would cover up everything and is one of the cheapest products you can buy. It is in a mousse form and comes in an orange package.
